Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced Medical Laboratory Technologist with strong leadership and management experience to lead laboratory operations within a growing healthcare organization. This senior management position is responsible for providing strategic direction, establishing advanced diagnostic laboratory services, and overseeing all aspects of laboratory operations. The successful candidate will play a key role in setting up and managing a state-of-the-art medical laboratory in Addis Ababa while ensuring high-quality patient care, operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and sustainable financial performance.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement strategies for expanding diagnostic laboratory services, including new technologies, quality systems, digital health solutions, and service growth.
  • Contribute to organizational strategic planning and align laboratory objectives with overall business goals.

Clinical Governance & Quality Management

  • Develop, implement, and monitor laboratory policies, procedures, quality control programs, and compliance frameworks.
  • Ensure adherence to international and national laboratory standards and patient safety requirements.
  • Manage Laboratory Information Systems (LIS/LIMS) to maintain data integrity, security, and efficient reporting.
  • Collaborate effectively with clinical and non-clinical teams to drive service excellence.

Operations Management

  • Oversee daily laboratory operations, workflow efficiency, patient access, and service delivery.
  • Establish and maintain quality assurance and safety programs.
  • Manage laboratory equipment lifecycle, including procurement, maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting.
  • Recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate laboratory staff.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets, monitor financial performance, and optimize resource utilization.
  • Oversee inventory management of laboratory consumables and supplies.
  • Monitor operational performance and prepare periodic reports.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related scientific field from a recognized institution.
  • Postgraduate training in business, management, or a related field is an advantage.
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant experience, including at least 4 years in a management or supervisory role.
  • Experience in clinical laboratory operations within healthcare institutions.
  • Experience with ISO-certified environments is an advantage.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory systems, information technology, and quality management practices.
  • Proven leadership, team management, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience introducing new laboratory equipment, tests, or healthcare facilities is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare regulations, patient-centered service delivery, and operational planning.
